World's tallest building to open Jan. 4 Burj Dubai
More than half-a-mile tall, the Burj Dubai tower is finally expected to officially open Jan. 4.
The date marks the fourth anniversary of the coming to power of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum in Dubai, one of seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. It also will be more than five years since construction began on the 160-story skyscraper, which reaches to a height of 2,700 feet.
The Chicago architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill is in charge of the $4 billion project. Construction is being carried out by Samsung Engineering & Construction of South Korea, which also built the Petronas Towers and Taipei 101.
