US WWII soldier to get monument in Belgium
An American man has been singled out for an unusual honor: a monument in Belgium memorializing his heroism during the World War II Battle of the Bulge.
Historians in the Belgian town of Grandmenil say they will dedicate a plaque Saturday on the spot where Cpl. Richard Wiegand was killed after firing a bazooka round that stopped a column of German tanks on a narrow, woodland road.
His actions early on the frigid Christmas morning of 1944 are credited with weakening a German offensive that was halted three days later.
