SCUD missile component from Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

A new exhibit on local veterans from the Civil War to the current day will open at 9:30 a.m. today at the Duluth Depot, 506 W. Michigan St.

The exhibit includes artifacts such as a cannonball from the Civil War, a leather bomber jacket worn by Harold Ruka in World War II, and a SCUD missile component from Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

Visitors also will be able to walk through a scene from Iraq based on photos from local veteran Mark Hilleren.

The exhibit looks at the war effort on the home front, with a display that contains a three-dimensional underground mine scene. The show will be part of a long-term display that could remain in place for as long as five years, although new artifacts will be rotated into the exhibit periodically.
