Rock Valle Lutheran Church Hosts 123rd Annual Mission Sale
Echo — Rock Valle Lutheran Church Hosts 123rd Annual Mission Sale
A tradition of the heart - giving to missions at home and around the world - that has been the tradition at Rock Valle Lutheran Church of rural Echo for the past 122 years. The Women of the ELCA at Rock Valle are preparing for their annual Mission Day to be held on Wednesday, June 16.
The day includes a worship service at 10 a.m. featuring guest speaker, Mrs. Sheryl (Otteson) Jacobson who served as a missionary to Chile. The service will also feature guest soloist, Joy Berg formerly of Belview and Pastor Dan Bowman on the “saw”.
The worship service will be followed by a salad luncheon at 11:30 a.m. and the sale of many handmade items will follow at 1 p.m. Auctioneer Glen Jorgenson of Clarkfield joins in the tradition each year. The sale includes hand-stitched quilts, dishtowels, afghans, blankets, pillows, rugs and numerous other items. The items are prepared and donated for the sale with all the proceeds being given to mission work locally and across the globe.
The very first sale, held in a haymow in 1887, had a net profit of $17.13 with $17 being donated to mission work and 13 cents saved for seed for the next year’s sale. The sale has grown immensely since then averaging between $9,000 and $10,000 in proceeds being raised for missions. The women are each part of a work group that produces a quilt or other special item for the sale. With the many individual donations, a great variety of items are donated each year for the auction.
