Queen Elizabeth Appoints New Keeper For The Crown Jewels In Tower Of London
Britain's Queen Elizabeth has appointed a new keeper of the Crown Jewels. Sir Richard Dannatt is the 159th Constable of The Tower of London and will safeguard the ancient valuables for the next five years.
The top Army general - who begins the role this summer - will be handed the Tower's golden keys in a formal ceremony later in the year.
The tradition of the Constable of the Tower - the most senior appointment at the royal palace - hails back ten centuries to William the Conqueror, who created the role for Geoffrey de Mandeville in the 11th century.
