There are a lot of firsts for me this holiday season. I didn't realize how much I would miss the change of seasons while living and working in Panama this year, and being in another country away from the family and friends I've spent the last 21 Christmases with definitely feels a little strange for me.

One thing I've been reminded of though during my time here is that none of these things should really change anything about how I enjoy or celebrate Christmas. In fact, if anything it should help me focus more on what Christmas is actually supposed to be about. Over the course of many years, snow, cold weather, my friends and family, my house in Peterborough, and yes, even presents, have subtly become inseparable from Christmas in my mind. Without even realizing it, these things became part of my definition of the holiday. I'm sure the same is true for you to some extent. What would Christmas be like if one or more of those things were missing this year? But in reality, that's not what it's about at all.
