The president of the Haitian Olympic Committee reports that HOC leaders are safe in the aftermath of the earthquake that has ravaged the country.

“Our direct families are safe but everyone is somehow affected. Our country is living a nightmare and we can only ask for your prayers,” writes Jean-Edouard Baker in an e-mail to Caribbean colleagues.

He offered no other details of the situation in Haiti, nor requests for help beyond prayer. The 7.0 earthquake Jan. 12 has apparently displaced hundreds of thousands of people, while fatalities are estimated in the tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands.
