Czech Gypsy editor seeks Canada asylum
The editor of the Gypsy radio service in the Czech Republic sought asylum in Canada to avoid living under racially motivated assaults, officials said.
Anna Polakova, chief editor of the Czech radio for Romanies, as Gypsies are formally called, requested asylum for her family and herself, saying she could not bear any more anti-Gypsy actions displaying discrimination, hatred and threats, Prague Radio reported Wednesday.
More than 600 Czechs, many of them Romanies, have asked for asylum in Canada since January. The Canadian authorities approved 34 requests.
