News of Colombia

Colombia through the eyes of world news and here's a place to share your Colombian experiences too.

View from Boys Farm

Sarah enjoyed volunteering for six weeks at a boy's farm high up in the mountains.

She says, "I am volunteering for six weeks, to work with the thirty boys, the nine gardens, and the thirty-six dairy cows that are here on the farm."

"The Open Arms Foundation works with kids living on the streets in Medellin. For the boys, the OAF first brings them to a day program at the foundation in Medellin. Here they feed and clothe them, teach them about academics and God, play with them, and show them love. Once the teachers and psychologists at the OAF feel that the boys are stable enough and ready to move on, they move them up to the boys’ farm in San Pedro, which is about one hour away by bus from Medellin. This is where I am now. The boys then live here until they are eighteen years old, at which time the OFA will help then find a job and help them get started in life on their own."

"I love knowing that it is helping other people and that I learned it in school and I didn’t just forget it after the test. In this case, it is growing vegetables and milking cows that help feed boys who no longer have to dig though garbage or steal for food or sniff industrial glue to numb the pain of hunger. These boys are growing up to be amazing young men with hearts burning for God and longing to help other street boys. I love that. I love that I am here applying what I learned in a little college in Iowa to help change the world one onion and one hug at a time."
