Biking around the Xian Wall
We spent a couple of days in Xian in the summer of 2007. It was a special trip since we had our parents and kids (7 and 10), it was like a mini family reunion.
Most people that come to Xian, come to see the Terracotta Army, the collection of more than 8,000 statues built more than 2,000 years ago by Emperor Qin. Xian, however, has much to offer besides this archaeological wonder.
The Xian City Wall, for example, is a must see. It has been recently restored and it is now possible to walk, or bike around the entire perimeter. It took us about three hours to go all the way around, stopping a lot along the way to check out the watch towers, take pictures with the soldiers, watch a mini "changing of the guard" and just observe every day life unfold down below the gates.
You can hire bicycles from the entrance at the South Gate. The bikes have seen better days, but they do the job. There are tandem bicycles available also, fun for couples, or if you are traveling with smaller kids so they can ride with an adult. It is very cheap to rent a bike, one or two dollars, but be prepared to leave a hefty deposit, about $15 per bike.
The wall is quite wide, and the ride is an easy one. It is certainly a fun way to spend a half-day if you want a break from temples, palaces and museums. It was certainly a great bonus for the kids, they really enjoyed being able to bike on a piece of history!
